The Essendon Keilor College Learner Model outlines clear, shared expectations for both students and teachers across three key phases of learning: Prepare, Engage, and Consolidate.

In the Prepare phase, students are expected to arrive on time with the necessary materials, wait appropriately outside the classroom, and enter calmly ready to learn. Teachers support this by setting up structured learning environments, directing seating, clearly displaying learning goals, and beginning lessons with a “Do Now” task to activate prior knowledge.
During the Engage phase, the focus is on active learning. Teachers explicitly teach new content, introduce key vocabulary, and provide opportunities for all students to participate and demonstrate understanding. They also offer feedback to guide improvement. Students, in turn, are expected to actively participate, demonstrate their understanding, seek and apply feedback, use resources correctly, respect others’ learning, and maintain a growth mindset.
In the Consolidate phase, students reflect on their learning, remain engaged until the end of the lesson, help reset the classroom, and continue learning beyond the lesson by revising and catching up on missed work. Teachers reinforce this by reviewing learning goals, assessing student understanding, assigning and communicating homework, and using lesson data to inform future teaching.
Overall, the model promotes a structured, consistent approach to teaching and learning, emphasizing preparation, active engagement, reflection, and continuous improvement for both students and teachers.
